Transloading Vs Cross Docking

Reduce Overall Transit Time of Your Imports into Canada

Transloading and cross docking are warehousing services that in many situations you can benefit from, as you look at ways to optimize your supply chain. In this article we explain what the differences are between transloading and cross docking and when these services could be of use to cut down on your overall transit time whenever shipping inland.

Transloading

You just received a notification that your cargo from Asia just reached the port. The goods are still stuffed in the container, and they still have to transfer to rail to make to their final inland destination. With Port and rail congestion issues, this means your containers will not make it to destination for some time. Transloading is part of an alternative solution that will allow you to receive your goods quicker.

This alternative involves picking up the containers at the Port and bringing them to a local transloading warehouse, instead of having the container continue on to the rail terminal. The containers will be unloaded, sorted, palletized, and reloaded onto a truck to reach you, the supplier. That multi-step operation is transloading.

Usually located near Port terminals, transloading facilities are equipped with the right equipment and personnel to destuff and unload containers very quickly. These facilities can usually turn the goods around within hours and reload in 53’ trucks for final delivery within the same day if needed. Transloading can greatly reduce overall transit time in some situations. Specifically, when the containers have to rail inland from the Ports. If you experienced delays with shipping from overseas, this is one solution to make up for lost time and ensure you receive your inventory quicker.

Cross Docking

Cross-docking usually takes place at warehouses or distribution centers. Your goods are usually palletized and labelled, and they’re about to be distributed to your different sellers or consumers. Within a small time frame, they are moved from one truck to another, and ready to reach their final destination. There are little to no storage costs as the goods move in and out typically within 48 hours.
